Joanna Craig Headstone
1904
Brief History
Joanna Craig, a free black woman, died in 1904 in Franklin Township. Her family had lived at this location (just north of Cashtown) since before the Civil War. When Joanna died, she left her real estate to Mrs. Mark Bream (as is noted in her September 21, 1904 obituary from the Gettysburg Compiler). At the time, Bream owned the house at the corner of Water Street and Carlisle Street. For some reason, the headstone never made it to Lincoln Cemetery, where Joanna was buried. Instead, it remained in the side yard of this Carlisle Street home where it can be seen today.
