Van Horn House
Brief History
In 1874, John Bartel transformed a small shop at this site into a dwelling house. The Star & Sentinel of April 8, 1874 noted that "Wm. T. Ziegler has sold his frame shop, with half lot of ground, opposite the Livery stable on Washington Street, to John Bartel for $1000. It is Mr. B's intention to convert it into a dwelling." Bartel lived here and operated a restaurant/brewery out of the residence.
